The reality of the situation is that liposuction should never be used as a method to lose weight, rather it should be a complement to an already healthy and active lifestyle. How safe is liposuction?
Liposuction is a very safe procedure, especially when performed by a double board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Emily Pollard. The procedure involves removing fat through a thin, hollow tube called a cannula that is attached to a vacuum-powered system. The fat is gently sucked through the cannula and removed from the body. Most patients experience tenderness, swelling and bruising around their treated areas following liposuction, and do not experience any more severe complications. What can you not do after liposuction?
Following your liposuction procedure, you’ll be asked to stop working, discontinue regular daily activities, and rest for the first seven to 10 days following your procedure. After about four weeks, Dr. Pollard will likely clear you to continue light workout routines at the gym or at home. You’ll also be asked to wear a compression garment following your procedure to reduce swelling, promote healing, and ensure your skin lays flat and tight against your body’s new contours.
How long is recovery after liposuction?
In all, it typically takes around 10 to 14 days to make a full initial recovery from your liposuction procedure, depending on how intensive your procedure is. After these 10 to 14 days, you’ll be able to return to most normal daily activities provided you wear your compression garment. Most patients fully heal and see the ultimate results of their liposuction treatment about six months to a year following their procedure. This is about the time that all swelling subsides and the body has settled into its new contours.
Does liposuction permanently remove fat?
Yes, liposuction does permanently remove fat from the treated areas. Once the fat is removed from the body, it is never replaced with new fat cells, meaning the results of your liposuction treatment have the potential to be permanent. That being said, it is still possible for you to gain weight following your liposuction procedure. In the event of a weight gain, the remaining fat cells in your body have the potential to swell up and migrate to the treated areas in which fat was removed, reversing the effects of your procedure. We highly encourage you to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle following your liposuction treatment to ensure you keep your desired results.
