Botox Myth Busters

What is Botox/Dysport?

  • Botox is a drug made from a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin. It is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically remove wrinkles.

How does Botox work?

  • Botox is injected into muscles, where it blocks nerve impulses to those tissues. The muscle activity that causes the frown lines is reduced, and a smoother look results.

Am I going to have that frozen look after receiving Botox?

  • After your injection you should look refreshed. Friends will notice ‘something different’, but they should not be able to tell you had something done.

Will Botox get rid of all my wrinkles?

  • Facial lines that exist when your face is totally relaxed are not very good candidates for Botox, they would need dermal filler. Botox works best on areas of a contracting muscle – between the eyes, forehead, and crows’ feet.

Will I see immediate results?

  • You will normally see improvement within a few days; maximum effect usually takes 10-14 days. At 2 weeks, whatever effect has occurred should be considered the maximum effect.

Is Botox Painful?

  • Any injection can hurt, although the needles used are very small and pain is usually minimal.  A cold pack can be applied before and after treatment to ease discomfort.

How often should I get Botox?

  • Most people see effects for 3 to 4 months, but several factors can affect that, and treatments can be adjusted.

Will I get bruised or swollen after treatment?

  • Most commonly, people will have redness at injection site; rarely some people may experience slight bruising or temporary uneven texture.

What happens if I think results should be more visible?

  • Every person and every muscle reacts differently.  Your injector may be conservative on the first treatment. If you would like a more dramatic look, you can receive additional injections at an additional cost.
