What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also called breast enlargement or breast implant surgery, is a procedure used to enlarge and re-shape the breasts. Women with naturally under-developed breasts often choose a breast augmentation procedure to improve their appearance, enhance their self-esteem, and improve their quality of life. A breast lift is a different procedure. A breast lift is intended to overcome the effects of gravity and time on the breasts by moving them upwards, restoring them to a more youthful position. A breast lift can be performed at the same time as a breast augmentation procedure.
How is Breast Augmentation Performed?
During your pre-surgery consultations, Dr. Pollard will work with you to determine what size and shape you would like your breasts to be. The goal is to produce a natural look with the size of the breasts in proportion to the rest of the body. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure usually performed under general anesthesia. An implant, filled with saline or silicone, is placed inside the breast. Incisions to insert the implant may be made in the armpit, underneath the breasts, or underneath the nipple. The choice of the incision site is usually made after considering which site is most likely to produce no visible scar. Recovery from the surgery is quick, with most women returning to work within a day or two. However, heavy lifting and vigorous activities may need to be avoided for several weeks after the surgery.
