Botox® for Underarm Sweating: Does it Really Work?

Summer is a great season to spend some time outdoors enjoying the warm weather. Unfortunately, with the heat of the summer months, you better expect to do some sweating, as well. This can come to be quite a nuisance, as you can end up sweating at times when you aren’t even physically active. Sweating can show through your clothes and smell, making it quite undesirable. This inconvenience leads many people to consider using Botox® to prevent sweating, especially under the arms.

When to Consider Botox®

If you have tried deodorant and other topical treatments to eliminate sweating under the arms and have had no success, it may be time to consider Botox®. Botox® is proven to work by blocking the nerve signals that stimulate your sweat glands and trigger the sweating response. After treatment, you can enjoy dry underarms for months to come.

What is Botox® Treatment Like?

The Botox® treatment is performed similarly to Botox® cosmetic treatments, except it is injected under the arms. This involves a series of injections which most patients find to be quite comfortable. After treatment, just like cosmetic injections, there is no downtime. Patients can return to work and other normal activities on the same day as their treatment.

When Will I Notice Results from Treatment?

Although Botox® begins to work immediately, it can take as long as four weeks for it to fully take effect. After this time, you will notice a significant reduction in underarm sweating. The effects of treatment typically last between six and seven months.

Put a Stop to Sweating

There’s no reason to suffer through the summer months every year with such a simple solution to sweating. To learn more about Botox® or find out if you are a good candidate for the treatment, contact Pollard Plastic Surgery. Pollard Plastic Surgery proudly serves patients in the Philadelphia and Bala Cynwyd, PA areas.

Top Plastic Surgery Procedures for Men

A common misconception is that plastic surgery is only performed on women.  Although women used to make up the majority of plastic surgery patients, today there are just as many men receiving plastic surgery treatments. In fact, many procedures are designed specifically for men to improve and maintain their masculine features. Here is a list of the top plastic surgeries for men.

Gynecomastiaplastic surgery procedures for me, gynecomastia, liposuction, neck lift, blepharoplasty, pollard plastic surgery, bala cynwyd, pa

Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by a build-up of fatty tissue in the chest area. This can give the undesired appearance of “man boobs”. Gynecomastia surgery can help to remove this fatty tissue and restore a sculpted, masculine appearance to a man’s physique.

Liposuction

Getting older causes many areas of the body to be less responsive to diet and exercise. If this is the case, you may be able to benefit from liposuction. Liposuction can be used nearly anywhere on the body, and can help men regain a lean, contoured figure,

Chin Augmentation

A weak jaw can contribute to a softer, less masculine appearance. Chin augmentations can help create a more defined jawline and fill out the profile of the face. Most men are often surprised at how much their appearance benefits from a simple chin augmentation.

Neck Lift

As mentioned above, a strong jawline is a large part of a masculine appearance. If you have loose, hanging skin on the neck, a neck lift may be just what you need. This procedure can help tighten the neck and improve how you look and feel.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, helps to correct sagging skin on the eyelids and rejuvenates the look of the eyes. Most patients find that this treatment makes them look less tired, resulting in a youthful, vibrant appearance. This treatment can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

Are You Considering One of These Treatments?

Most Popular Non-Surgical Procedures for Generation Xers

As a Gen Xer, you are in your 30s to 50s and may be starting to notice what aging can do to your body. Whether it’s wrinkles, loose skin, or stubborn pockets of fat, there are plenty of non-surgical options to help you maintain a youthful appearance for several more years. In fact, Gen Xers make up for about 40% of all plastic surgery procedures, both surgical and non-surgical. Here are the most popular procedures to help you stay one step ahead of the aging game.

Injectables & Dermal FillersMost Popular Non-Surgical Procedures for Generation Xers, pollard plastic surgery, bala cynwyd, pa

Injectables and dermal fillers are some of the most popular anti-aging procedures, and it’s no question why. These treatments often provide instant results, smoothing wrinkles and adding volume to the skin. When performed by a qualified professional, these products can create stunningly natural-looking results. Another great benefit is that there is no downtime required for these treatments. You can expect to return to work the same day, with results already visible in most cases!

Microdermabrasion

If you’re looking for radiant skin in just one visit, consider microdermabrasion, a non-invasive, chemical-free exfoliation process. We use diamond tip microdermabrasion, which is safe for both the body and face, to remove the top layer of the epidermis. The diamond tip is used as a mechanical exfoliant, acting as a tiny pressure washer. In addition to removing the top layer of dead skin cells, the procedure results in increased blood flow, collagen production, and new skin cell development.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels come in a great variety, offering varying levels of strengths. These treatments remove dead skin cells, reducing the appearance of discoloration and wrinkles along the way. After treatment, your skin is left with a smooth, healthy glow. These customizable treatments allow every patient to get the most out of their chemical peel.

Laser Resurfacing

The EndyMed™ laser resurfacing treatment not only gives you smoother, healthier-looking skin, but also improves the tone of your skin. It combines advanced energy-based technology with the precision of a computer-guided treatment to give you outstanding results. The energy from the system heats the layers of skin to stimulate collagen development and repair the signs of aging.

How Can I Try These Treatments?

If you are considering any of these treatments, contact Pollard Plastic Surgery. Pollard Plastic Surgery welcomes patients from the Philadelphia and Bala Cynwyd, PA areas.

Blepharoplasty Recovery: 5 Things You Should Know

With age comes many unwanted changes. For many, these changes include deepened eye wrinkles. With the help of advanced cosmetic procedures like blepharoplasty, otherwise known as eyelid surgery, your age can go back to being just a number! But, before jumping into this beautification procedure, there are five things you should know.

Preparing for Common Recovery Symptoms

While blepharoplasty is a relatively minimally invasive procedure, there are some common symptoms to expect during recovery. First and foremost, you should expect to experience some swelling around the eyes. Swelling may be minimal at first, but can worsen over time. To prevent further swelling and reduce current swelling, cold compresses and ice packs can help. Typically, swelling will last two weeks. Another common symptom of blepharoplasty is scratchy, itchy eyes. It may also be irritable to blink at first, but continue to do so frequently as this can help the eyes with feelings of dryness and irritation.

blepharoplasty, before and after, blepharoplasty blog, pollard plastic surgery, bala cynwyd, pa

Be Prepared to Give Your Eyes Rest

Resting during recovery from a blepharoplasty is a must if you want to recover quickly. So, instead of engaging in activities that you would have to use your eyes, be prepared to find a few other ways to spend your time in recovery. Watching tv, playing games on your phone, and reading all take eye movement. And, during these activities, you may be less likely to blink as frequently as you should during your recovery. Instead, consider activities in which you can find time to rest your eyes, like listening to a book on tape or the radio.

Prepare to Go Without Makeup

Applying and wearing makeup during a blepharoplasty recovery may not be the best idea. Doing so can actually reopen the incision made during the procedure. So, to heal the best way possible and to ensure a fast and effective recovery, you should consider putting your makeup routine on hold for a couple of weeks.

Consider a Few Lifestyle Changes

Because you’ll be recovering from eyelid surgery, there are a few things you will not be able to do, especially in the beginning. These activities include taking a shower, sleeping on your stomach, and inviting pets into the bed at night. Consider your daily tasks and determine which lifestyle changes you’ll need to make after your procedure. This way, you’ll be prepared to make these changes during your recovery.

Prepare to Relax

Most activities will require you to use your eyes. So, it’s important to prepare for a state of relaxation post-blepharoplasty. Vigorous and strenuous activities should be avoided at all costs during the recovery period. Prepare to take it easy for at least two weeks following surgery.

Do’s and Don’ts: Preparing for Breast Augmentation Surgery

You’ve done your research, made the decision, and you’ve scheduled the date of your breast augmentation surgery. What else is there to do? Well, there are a few things to keep in mind before the date of your surgery arrives. This way, you’ll be prepared to help your nurses and surgeon do their jobs to the best of their ability. And, you’ll have the smoothest breast augmentation surgery experience possible.

Before Your Breast Augmentation Surgery DO:

  • breast augmentation blog, breast augmentation do's and don'ts, pollard plastic surgery, bala cynwyd, pa

Get Up Early: Rushing on the big day won’t help keep your stress levels managed. So, make sure to give yourself enough time to pack, prepare, and get to your appointment on time by waking up a little early the day of the surgery.

  • Come Without Makeup and Jewelry: You’ll need to show up the morning of your appointment wearing no makeup or jewelry. As far as clothing goes, choose something warmer. Most patients wake up from anesthesia feeling cooler. Also, choosing comfortable slip-on shoes will make for easier changing before surgery.
  • Wear Your Glasses: Just as makeup and jewelry shouldn’t be worn, contact lenses should also not be worn on the day of your breast augmentation surgery. Instead, show up wearing your glasses. While they will need to be taken off before the surgery, at least you’ll be able to see up until then!

Before Your Breast Augmentation Surgery DON’T:

  • Eat or Drink After Midnight: The stomach should be empty before all operations. So, you shouldn’t eat or drink anything the morning before your surgery. That means from 12 a.m. until after your surgery is complete you shouldn’t have a meal, snack, or even a drink. Prepare for this by eating an early dinner and skipping the glass of water by your bed throughout the night!
  • Miss the Phone Call: Your anesthesiologist will schedule a call to talk to you the night before your surgery. This conversation is imperative to help you gain knowledge on the process of the anesthesia the following day. Without this phone call, many clinics will not even go through with the scheduled surgery. So, be sure to stay near your phone!
  • Worry: You’ve done your research and made your decisions. You’ve wanted this for a very long time. And, you’re doing the best you can to prepare – even reading this article for extra tips! So, don’t worry about the day ahead! Soon, it will all be said and done and you will have taken the next step to being a more confident you!

How long is the Recovery from a Tummy Tuck?

As the fall season approaches, it is time to start thinking about getting your body ready for the summer season. If you’re interested in having a tummy tuck, we often recommend the September through December months as an opportune time to schedule your surgery. Pollard Plastic Surgery, which proudly serves the Bala Cynwyd and Philadelphia communities, is happy to welcome you to our office. We have been helping men and women achieve their aesthetic goals for 25 years.

One of the most common questions we are asked in our office is about the recovery time for a tummy tuck. We’ve created an outline to help you understand the recovery process for this popular cosmetic surgery option.

The First Week after a Tummy Tuck

The first five days after surgery is typically a regiment of bed rest. It is important to keep your head elevated, and knees slightly bent over pillows as this position eases pressure on the operation site and encourages better blood flow. You will wear a supportive abdominal garment to help prevent fluid retention. You will most likely have drains to help remove excess fluid that can occur after the operation. The drains are usually removed with in the first two weeks of surgery.  During this time, you will be encouraged to walk short distances around the house every day to help reduce the formation of blood clots and promote healing. The first few days are the most challenging, but every day you should feel better than the one before. You’ll need to stay hydrated and drink lots of water. On or about the first week, you will have your first check-up with Dr. Pollard where you will be given further instructions based on your progress.

The Second Week after a Tummy Tuck

On the second week, we encourage slow but steady movement. The key here is to not overdo it because you are still healing. It is a good idea to have a family member or friend around to help. The less strain you put on the operation area the better. You shouldn’t be driving at all up to this point, as sudden braking and accelerating can cause your body stress even if you are a passenger.

The Third Week after a Tummy Tuck

Week three represents another increase in movement. At this point it is still best to have a friend or family member purchase groceries, pick up the kids from school and run errands. However, a leisurely walk in the neighborhood can be a form of healthy movement. We encourage you to take breaks during physical activity; there’s no need to push yourself. The majority of our patients head back to work around this time, as long as they have jobs that are not physically taxing.

The Fourth Week after a Tummy Tuck

You should feel significantly better. You should be able to resume many of your pre-surgery activities, but don’t be surprised if you still do not have your pre-surgery stamina. You shouldn’t lift anything over five pounds, but you can perform low impact exercises.

The Fifth Week after a Tummy Tuck

You may still feel some tenderness or experience some swelling but in most instances, you are free to resume activities as usual.

Schedule a consultation with our office and get on our fall surgery schedule sooner rather than later.

4 Steps to Great Skin this Fall!

Having healthy skin is not only physically beneficial; it also gives you confidence, which allows your beautiful personality to shine through. Sadly, the extra sun exposure that we encounter in the summer can be harsh and damaging to our skin. In order to make sure your skin is glowing in the fall, try to incorporate these quick and easy skin care tips into your routine!

#1 Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen!

Sunscreen is extremely important when it comes to protecting your skin and keeping it youthful. Famous stars such as Jennifer Aniston and Halle Berry have disclosed that daily sunscreen usage is a major contributing factor to their incredible complexions. Even though we see less sunshine in the fall, the UV rays are still present. Wearing a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher will help to prevent signs of aging such as sunspots, creases, and wrinkles. Our favorite EltaMD UV Facial SPF 30+ is a medical grade sunscreen that is beneficial to all skin types and can be worn alone or under makeup. We also love EltaMD UV Elements SPF 44 a multi-tasking mineral sunscreen that combines a 100% physical sunscreen in a hyaluronic moisturizing base with a touch of universal tint.

#2 Invest in a Quality Moisturizer

Due to the cold, dry, and oftentimes windy air that we are exposed to in the fall, our skin tends to become seriously dehydrated. Therefore, it is important to use a moisturizer on your face, hands, and any other area that will be unprotected from the chilly air.  Hyaluronic based moisturizers are loaded with anti-oxidants to saturate your skin with moisture and rejuvenate your skin.  For your face we recommend DermHA Hyaluronic Moisturizing Crème Plus a rich and nourishing moisturizer that helps reduce free radical damage while providing excellent moisture. For your entire body we love DermHA Therapeutic Crème to hydrate, protect and soften.

#3 Use Your Exfoliating Cleanser

Fall is the time to rid oneself of any skin cells that were damaged by the summer sun. Although it may sound like a difficult process, it can be easily achieved. Avoid fragranced cleansers, as they can irritate the skin. We recommend DermHA Gentle Exfoliating Cream and DermHA Lactic Acid Exfoliating Serum which combine fruit acid and vitamins to lighten pigmentation, minimize blemishes, while reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

#4 Get Some Vitamin A

Take your skin to the next level. Using a prescription retinoid is proven to smooth the texture of the skin. It can help repair damaged summer skin and combat signs of aging by reducing the appearance of brown spots, lines, and wrinkles. It heals from the inside out to create clearer, brighter, smoother skin. We recommend Obagi® Tretinoin as a prescription strength retinol that can only be used under the guidance of a physician.

Dr. Pollard Celebrates Her 25th Year in Practice

We couldn’t be more pleased and honored to share a fantastic recent article in the Philadelphia Tribune celebrating Dr. Emily Pollard, who the Tribune cited as, “one of the region’s leading plastic surgeons”. The article, entitled, “Local surgeon celebrates 25 years in practice”, describes how, “In September, Dr. Emily Pollard celebrated her 25th year in practice. She specializes in cosmetic surgery which includes body contouring, facial rejuvenation, and breast surgery.”

Going on to note that, “Dr. Emily Pollard is a board certified plastic surgeon”, the article describes in magnificent detail how Dr. Pollard, “was drawn to plastic surgery while doing her rotations in medical school. She says she liked the problem-solving that was involved and seeing the end product.”

Pollard Plastic Surgery, 25 year logo, Dr. Emily PollardIt really is this commitment to problem-solving on behalf of her patients that characterizes Dr. Pollard’s career of service to her community. But leave it to Dr. Pollard to be extremely thankful and appreciative to everyone who has supported her in fulfilling that mission: “’I am certainly grateful to all of my patients, the staff that I have and my family for supporting me during this time,” Pollard said as she reflected on her years practicing medicine.”

Patient-centric care runs deep in the Pollard family, as Dr. Pollard’s father was a urologist, who encouraged Dr. Pollard to pursue her ambition of helping patients realize their aesthetic and cosmetic dreams, even though she and her father both knew she would need to be a genuine trailblazer, as even “early on, Pollard knew she would be a rarity in her field. She was one of two African-American women out of a group of 35 surgical residents when she completed her residency at Georgetown University during the 1980s.”

This took tremendous courage and resilience on Dr. Pollard’s part, and she recently reflected on those early struggles, recalling how as an African-Americans, she frequently was “mistaken for someone other than a surgeon and asked to retrieve a wheelchair or draw blood for lab work while in various medical settings.”

The courage and persevering attitude that Dr. Pollard exemplifies is a tribute to her upbringing and tenacity: “When I went into practice, there were very few African-American plastic surgeons and there were even fewer African-American female plastic surgeons, so it was kind of a lonely trip,” Pollard recalled. Nevertheless, Dr. Pollard persevered, and that persevering attitude paid off, in large part because she was able to stay grounded, for which she “credits her parents and being a member of the National Medical Association, the nation’s oldest and largest organization of African-American physicians.”

Dr. Pollard at first practiced in the Indianapolis area before making the decision in 1996 to move to Pennsylvania and establish her cosmetic surgery practice near Philadelphia, and as the Philadelphia Tribune notes, “Dr. Pollard currently runs her private practice in Bala Cynwyd and has served as the chief of plastic surgery at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood since 2006.”

The Philadelphia Tribune article captures the essence of Dr. Pollard’s philosophy, which is the essential component to the caring and compassionate way that she treats all of her patients.

In the Tribune article, Dr. Pollard describes her approach to helping patients achieve their dreams: “If somebody comes in for body contouring, we want to look at them from all sides, not only physically but physiologically,” Pollard explained. “I may ask lifestyle questions because we know that you are what you eat and we know that exercise improves your muscles, your bone strength, and your posture and supports your metabolism. That all goes into a good-looking body,” she continued. If you ask to be pencil thin but you have lousy posture or no good muscle or bone support, then nothing I do is going to turn out all that great.”

But beyond just her own words, the article aptly sums up the feelings that Dr. Pollard’s fellow physicians have for her, their respect and admiration for her skill as well as her ability to achieve outstanding results for her patients. Dr. Wilfreta Baugh, an internist who referred patients to Dr. Pollard for many years, sums up the sentiments of her fellow physicians: “She’s one of best doctors, from my perspective as a physician to refer patients to,” Baugh said, because she is so, “extraordinary gifted. She’s also extraordinarily kind to people who have problems.” Many patients that Dr. Baugh referred to Dr. Pollard had “developed scars and other types of physical issues”, and often times, “the problems that they were having would be physical [issues] that caused them to have emotional difficulties, and that’s where (Dr. Pollard) is a real jewel,” Baugh said.

Dr. Baugh, who is a former president of the local chapter of the National Medical Association, the Medical Society of Eastern Pennsylvania, reports that “Dr. Pollard has been an active member of the Medical Society and noted that other African-American physicians who hold similar positions don’t often show up to their meetings.”

As the article notes, Dr. Pollard has worked long and hard to be able to be of such service to her patients, beginning with her college education at the exclusive and elite Seven Sisters college, Smith College: “Pollard was an honors student at Smith College and received a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin. She graduated from Meharry Medical College, where she was class valedictorian. She completed her general surgery residency and served as chief resident at Georgetown University Medical Center. Pollard completed her plastic surgery residency at Indiana University.”

We are beyond delighted to have this kind of recognition for Dr. Pollard’s incredible 25 years in practice, and we encourage you to take the time to read the article (LINK) and then to schedule your consultation with Dr. Pollard. No matter whether you need body contouring or facial rejuvenation procedures, which are among the most popular procedures requested by Dr. Pollard’s patients, to help you so that “unsightly bulges are removed from (your) thighs, hips, abdomen or other areas”, Dr. Pollard can help you get the kind of results you deserve.

Take the time today to schedule your consultation with Dr. Pollard, and receive the benefits of Dr. Pollard’s professional skill and expertise, but also her positive outlook on life: “Have faith in yourself and gravitate toward positive thinking [and] supportive people.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!
