Gynecomastia, the over-development or enlargement of male breast tissue, is a common problem for many men. Up to 60% of men will have some degree of gynecomastia during their lifetime. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair self-confidence. Some men may avoid certain physical activities and intimacy to hide their condition.
Patients with gynecomastia should undergo medical evaluation to determine the cause, as the over growth of breast tissue may result from hormonal changes, heredity, or the use of certain drugs. If gynecomastia is due to medication, discontinuing the medication or initiating testosterone replacement therapy may decrease the size of the breast.
If gynecomastia persists and it is a cosmetic problem for the patient, there are many options available for treating the condition. The best candidates for surgical management of gynecomastia are patients with benign breast enlargement, who experience social or personal discomfort, and are willing to undergo a minor outpatient surgical procedure.
Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called a reduction mammaplasty. It can reduce breast size, and flatten and enhance the chest contours. Dr. Pollard uses a new surgical technique that eliminates the need for large incisions. Each breast is injected with a dilute solution of epinephrine and lidocaine, and then treated with liposuction. Any firm tissue that is left behind can be removed through a small incision. This technique allows for more precise sculpting, so the final appearance is natural.

You will see the results immediately. There is, however, a component of settling and swelling that will affect the final appearance. It may take several months to see the final result.
Most incision lines may be concealed within natural contours; however, some scars may be visible and are a necessary result of breast reduction surgery.
After surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions and you may need to wear an elastic bandage to minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as it heals. Typically, patients return to work within a few days.
