Botox by Dr. Pollard
Botox® represents a natural non-surgical way to rejuvenate an aging face.  Dynamic wrinkles are the lines that form from years of smiling, squinting and frowning.  Botox® can dramatically reduce dynamic wrinkles and create a more rested and youthful look by relaxing the muscles which create wrinkles and lines. Sometimes headaches that are caused by frequent frowning may be relieved.

For more than 15 years, physicians have safely and successfully used Botox® to control involuntary blinking and facial tics. While Botox has few negative side effects, doctors noticed that patients receiving Botox® injections experienced a dramatic reduction in frown lines and wrinkles around the eyes. In 1993, physicians began using Botox® as a means of reducing lines and wrinkles. Depending on where it is injected, Botox® works by blocking the action of the muscles responsible for frown lines or crow's feet, resulting in smoother skin around the eyes and/or forehead. A minute amount of the substance is injected directly into the muscle, and within 24-72 hours, the muscles relax, reducing the appearance of frown lines or crows' feet. Patients receiving Botox® injections also report a decrease in tension headaches!

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ Botox     What is Botox®?

Botox® is a dilute, purified form of Botulinum toxin which is an extremely effective muscle relaxant.

FAQ Botox     How does Botox® eliminate wrinkles?

Botox® works very effectively in eliminating the appearance of facial wrinkles that occur with aging or overuse.  A few drops of Botox® are injected with a tiny needle into the muscle that creates the wrinkle.  Botox® can inactivate the muscles that produce the wrinkles, thereby causing the lines to disappear or dramatically diminish.  Botox® is ideal for improving and smoothing the skin between the eyebrows, the lines of the forehead, and the crow's feet area around the eyes.

FAQ Botox     Where is Botox® used?

Botox® is used on the face, only around the eyes and forehead so as not to affect a patient's smile. It is important to understand that Botox® only relaxes the overactive facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Your skin will feel the same and you will have normal sensation in all treated areas. Muscles that are not treated and related to other expressions are not affected.

FAQ Botox     Does a Botox® injection hurt?

Applying a topical anesthetic cream or ice compresses for several minutes prior to the treatment will effectively numb the area. When the Botox® is injected, you may feel a slight stinging sensation that quickly subsides. Once the injection is complete, the nurse applies an ice compress and the discomfort disappears.

FAQ Botox     Is Botox® safe?

Botox® has been used safely and successfully by ophthalmologists for over 10 years and for wrinkle therapy since the early 1990's. Although it is a toxin, it is safe and there have been no serious side effects reported.  The most common minor complication is a slight and very temporary drooping of the eyelid.  Botox® is used in extremely small amounts and does not spread throughout the body.  It is administered right in our office and you can immediately resume full activity.

FAQ Botox     What are the advantages of Botox®?

  • Botox® is a quick and effective way to remove wrinkles. A typical treatment takes 10 minutes. Results are seen within 4 to 7 days.
  • Little discomfort.
  • Immediately resume full activity.  There is no physical evidence that you had a cosmetic procedure done.
  • The effect of Botox® is reversible-lasting between 3 to 9 months depending on the number of previous treatments.
  • A memory response may develop with repeated Botox® injections if they are done every 3 months for approximately one-year. So, although the effects are not permanent, there may be a gradual lengthening of the time interval between treatments. This will mean fewer treatments to obtain the same effect!
  • Botox® is a safe, non-surgical approach to facial rejuvenation.

FAQ Botox     Who is the best candidate for Botox®?

Botox® is for almost anyone who desires a more rested and youthful look.  Patients have the added benefit of preventing further etching of the skin caused by repeated squinting, frowning, and creasing of the forehead.  Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disease should not be treated.

BOTOX® and Severe Underarm Sweating

BOTOX® is FDA-approved for the treatment of severe underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical agents. BOTOX® treatment helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don't receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops.

Through fifteen years of use, the most commonly reported side-effect is slight tenderness at the injection site. Botox® takes just minutes to inject and its' effects usually last for six months or longer. There's no recovery period required following Botox® injections; patients can resume their normal activities immediately.

Is BOTOX® Treatment Right for Me?
Dr. Pollard can help you decide if BOTOX® treatment is right for you. In order to make the right treatment decision, you should discuss the following with before receiving BOTOX® injections:
• Dr. Pollard’s experience with BOTOX® treatment
• Effectiveness and side effects of BOTOX®*

You should tell Dr. Pollard if:
• You are allergic to BOTOX® product or anything in the preparation
• You have a neuromuscular disease such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, motor neuropathy, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome
• You have an infection at the intended site of injection
• You are taking antibiotics or other drugs, such as curare, that may interfere with neuromuscular transmission
• You are being treated with any medications
.
What Should I expect after BOTOX® treatment?
You should notice a significant reduction in underarm sweating within 4 weeks of your first treatment. There is a possibility that some sweat glands may be missed, and you may continue to experience some sweating from the untreated areas. If you do not see a significant reduction in sweating, you should contact us and request a follow-up consultation.
