Breast Reduction

Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems such as back and neck pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities and breathing problems due to the excessive weight. Bra straps may leave indentations in women’s shoulders. Additionally, unusually large breasts can make teenage girls and women feel extremely self-conscious.

Breast reduction (a reduction mammaplasty) can remove fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter and firmer.

Please call 610-667-3303 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Pollard to discuss breast reduction, or complete a confidential Inquiry Request Form.

FAQs

Am I a good candidate for breast reduction?

If oversized breasts cause health and medical problems, interfere with routine activities, disrupt sleep, or make you self-consciousness about your appearance, you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction. Discuss you medical history and expectations from surgery with Dr. Pollard during your initial consultation.

How can male breast size be reduced?

Many men have gynecomastia — enlargement of one or both breasts. Male breast reduction can be accomplished with either surgery or liposuction.  Dr. Pollard can discuss the options with you based on your individual anatomy and needs.

How I will maintain a healthy breast after reduction?

You should perform monthly breast self-examinations and have a yearly examination by a physician. The American Cancer Society recommends that you start breast mammograms at the age of 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer, consult with your doctor to decide when your first mammogram should occur.

What about possible complications?

Risks and potential complications are best discussed at the time of your consultation. Be sure to give your complete medical history to Dr. Pollard, so that she can assess your risks and discuss them with you.

How should I prepare for the surgery?

If you are a smoker, stop smoking well in advance of the surgery.  Maintain good health and avoid excessive exposure to sunlight, as well as the light from tanning beds.  Stop taking all aspirin-containing medications, Vitamin E, and all herbs at least 14 days prior to surgery.  Be sure to mention all medications you have been taking with Dr. Pollard and the anesthesiologist.

How does Dr. Pollard evaluate the need for breast reduction surgery?

In addition to your breast health history, Dr. Pollard will obtain information regarding your medical conditions, drug allergies, and any medical treatments that you have received. She will consider such factors as the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin, and the placement of the nipple and areola. If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift may be recommended.

When will I see the results?

You will see the results immediately. There is, however, a component of settling and swelling that will affect the final appearance of your breasts. It usually takes between three and six months to see the final result.

What about possible complications?

Any potential complications will be discussed at the time of your consultation. Be sure to give your complete medical history to Dr. Pollard, so that she can adequately assess your health and discuss any risks with you.
